LASIK

The procedure involves reshaping the front part of the eye called the cornea with an excimer laser. First, the surface cells of the cornea called the epithelium are temporally hinged to one side using a device called a microkeratome.  The laser is then pulsed onto the stromal layer of the cornea and once all the “reshaping” is accomplished the hinge “flap” is put back into place which provides a relatively quick and painless recovery.  To take Lasik surgery even farther we now have IntraLase ®.  IntraLase ® is the first all-laser technique for making the corneal flap during the first step of the LASIK procedure.  Instead of using the traditional microkeratome, the surgeon uses an IntraLase infrared beam to precisely create a microthin flap.  IntraLase allows the surgeon to produce a “flap” of exact depth, diameter, and hinge location and coupled with WAVEFRONT Lasik provides the patient with a totally customized and personalized procedure.
